Virtually every hole is tree-lined and if you vary just a fraction off-line with your drives you will unlikely be able to find the greens with your second. All six of the par 3's present different challenges too.

The entire course of less than 6,000 yards is laid out in quite a compact area, formerly a racecourse until the late 1800's, and is relatively flat. However, when playing the course you do not get a feel that the layout is as bunched as it probably is and an aerial photograph would no doubt reveal.

This is primarily because most of the holes are bordered by trees and thus protected from adjacent fairways. The routing is fairly inventive too in so much that many of the holes run along the boundary of the course at various stages of the round.

Four of the short holes are played uphill and all in the same direction whilst the other two are the opposite way and down the gradual slope of the course. The pick of the bunch is the 15th where you will find a wickedly turning green but none are weak holes.

There are a number of solid holes on the course but the best is saved for last at the par four 18th. Played slightly uphill and back towards the clubhouse it requires two fine shots to reach the green that has a tricky putting surface.

Other holes of note are the tough dog-legged third, the wall-side fifth and the snaking 11th.

As you would expect from a course at 1000 feet above sea level you will also experience some fantastic long-distance views.
