Rye (Jubilee)
Played closer to the sea – on land which has receded several hundred yards over the past few decades – the terrain is less exciting but none-the-less there are some fine holes.
There are 12 holes in total but they play as too loops of nine to make up a full complement of 18. How? You might reasonably ask.
The first five holes are played twice, albeit sometimes from slightly different tees, but whereas on the front nine you play holes six, seven and eight on the back nine you play a different trio of holes; 15, 16 and 17. Each nine closes with the same hole.
Holes 15 and 16 are truly superb and wouldn’t be out of place on the Old course, nor any other top links course for that matter, whilst the mammoth dunes acting as the backdrop to the fourth/13th is a wonderful sight.
A full day at Rye is one of the finer things in golf and if you are lucky enough to receive an invitation from one of their members I suggest you grab it with both hands.
